Hello,
I am John Scott.
I have over ten years of experience teaching visual effects and digital literacy. I’m passionate about helping the people around me and I serve in local government. Watch my videos and learn more about my career by clicking on the “My Portfolio” button.
I have a passion for creating art in various mediums. My earliest memories are interpreting the world around through drawing people, making maps, designing houses and cities on the computer, and storytelling. Back in 2014 I created ScottHelp, a YouTube channel that teaches others on make special effects in Adobe After Effects. My channel takes the approach of educating while entertaining as many of my tutorials include skits or short films before the breakdown. As of today, ScottHelp has gained over 190K views in total.
To learn even more about film making, I attended Flashpoint Chicago College in 2017 and graduated with an Associates in Film in 2019. Throughout my time at Flashpoint, I learned multiple facets of professional filmmaking, worked with people of all backgrounds on various short films, music videos and other special projects. It was a developmental experience and taught me how to adapt goals and navigate in a major city.
I continued to explore my other interests and found ways to incorporate my passion of arts. In 2020, I enrolled at Illinois State University studying Political Science and graduated in 2023. Throughout my time living in Central Illinois, I pursued activities and jobs that gave me the opportunity to express myself. Whether that was being active in registered student organizations, working videography jobs on campus, or simply photographing the new area I lived in.
A majority of my projects, including my YouTube tutorials, were focused on creating personal art. Going into the professional world gave me the opportunity to work on creative design.
After I interned at the McLean County Government as a Budget Analyst, I accepted a job offer to continue my work as a Digital Navigator in a State-County partnership. That position gave me the opportunity to design flyers, social media posts and videos for people in my home state to take action on government initiatives.
I recently moved to the Pacific Northwest to become a Technology Instructor and Community Organizer for the Black Brilliance Research Project. For a year, I taught digital literacy and networking at the University of Washington Tacoma.
I now work for the City of Kent, Washington in the communications department for the Mayor’s Office. To learn more about my current and past positions as well as see my artwork, please visit the tabs at the top of the website.
