Black Brilliance Research Project

Mar 2024 - Feb 2025

During my time as a Technology Instructor and Community Organizer for the Black Brilliance Research Project (BBR), I taught technical and soft skills at the University of Washington Tacoma.

I was one of the lead instructors for Connect Across Tacoma’s (CAT) Digital Stewards program. CAT trains neighborhood leaders in the technical and community organizing skills necessary to create and maintain critical Internet networks and create thriving digital futures for their communities. This includes training in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, internet infrastructure, technology skills, collaborative research, fund development, outreach, mutual aid, and community organizing.

Upon completion, participants are eligible to apply for a paid position that best fit their interests and skillset.

I worked with staff to develop curriculum, homework and quizzes. I was also in charge of documentation. Including filming and photographing each class session or any outreach event. I also ensured that footage was uploaded to the cloud for our students and funders.

I researched and recommended recording equipment for our program. I was also the communications specialist and attended various networking events to find potential partners that could collaborate with the company.

Some of my various other duties included:

• Set up, maintain and operate technology and supplies in our office.

• Interview potential students for our upcoming cohort. Analyze characteristics and skills and manage their contact info. Communicate updates to staff and candidates.

• Create an interactive learning environment that resonates with both youth and adult learners.

• Collaborate with universities, government officials, and public and private orgs. to enhance our curriculum.

• Communicate daily updates to students.

• Learn new technologies, programs and skills to teach students.

• Earn various certifications in teaching and technical skills.

• Provide assistance to students that we hire as fellows to the program.

• Help facilitate community outreach events.

• Build and maintain relationships with community leaders and organizations.

• Work with organizations nationwide to ensure job placements best fit for students.
